Data sanitization is the process of removing or destroying the information on a memory device in a way that makes it impossible to get it back. When a device has been sanitized, there is no longer any data that can be used. Even with the help of advanced forensic tools, the data will never be able to be recovered. Data sanitization can be done in two main ways: data erasure and physical destruction.

Data erasure is a software-based way to erase data from any data storage device by writing 0s and 1s over all of the device’s sectors. By writing over the data on a storage device, the data can no longer be retrieved.

Physical destruction is the process of shredding hard drives, smartphones, printers, laptops, and other storage media into tiny pieces with large mechanical shredders or degaussers.
